Metalworking Fluid Suppliers and Manufacturers: How to Source and Compare Fluids

Metalworking fluid suppliers fall into three groups, specialty fluid makers, oil companies and distributors, and a buyer gets comparable quotes from them only by sending one written specification and comparing cost per liter of working fluid. This reference sells no fluid and ranks no company.

Suppliers sell four types of metalworking fluids, from neat oils to synthetics. Cost in use equals concentrate price multiplied by in-use concentration, so one concentrate used at 8 % instead of 5 % by volume costs 60 % more per liter of working fluid.

  • Supplier types: specialty companies, oil companies, distributors (Kline, 2014)
  • Market: top 10 held about 45 to 65 % per region in 2012 (Kline)
  • Quotes: concentrate price x in-use concentration, per liter of working fluid
  • Mixture SDS updated by makers by 19 Nov 2027 (29 CFR 1910.1200(j)(3))

Standards, regulations and exposure limits are checked against their issuing bodies, product values against the named data sheet, and every figure carries its source and date; see our methodology and fact-checking.

Who Supplies Metalworking Fluids?#

Metalworking fluids come from three kinds of supplier in Kline & Co.'s market study (STLE TLT, March 2014): specialty chemical companies that sell mostly direct with technical service, oil companies that sell commodity straight and soluble oils largely through distributors, and distributors with local stock.

Specialty fluid makers, oil companies and distributors#

Specialty companies give technical service and lead in chemical management programs, oil companies sell commodity oils with minimal service, and local distributors carry many non-metalworking products (Kline, STLE TLT, March 2014). The table compares the three types.

Supplier type How it sells Service and range Examples (illustrative, alphabetical) Source
Specialty chemical companies Mostly direct sales Broad product lines, technical and application service, leading suppliers of chemical management programs Blaser Swisslube, FUCHS, Master Fluid Solutions, Oemeta, Quaker Houghton, Yushiro Kline, TLT March 2014
Oil companies Largely through distributors Commodity straight and soluble oils, minimal service Castrol, ExxonMobil (Mobilcut), HPCL (Koolkut), Idemitsu (Daphne), TotalEnergies Kline, TLT March 2014
Distributors Local presence, many non-metalworking products A few large ones run chemical management with specialty companies Santie Midwest, Univar Solutions Kline, TLT March 2014; SEC 8-K, 2023

How concentrated is the supplier market?#

The supplier market is extremely fragmented: the top 10 suppliers held about 45 to 65 % per region in Kline's 2012 data, and very few held more than 10 %.

Kline's reason: "no standardized products, there is no significant economy of scale".

What to Specify Before You Contact a Metalworking Fluid Supplier#

A metalworking fluid specification covers eight points in this reference's checklist: application, workpiece materials, machines and system, mix water, excluded chemistries, commercials, trial terms and service level; no ISO or ASTM document defines a metalworking fluid request for quote.

  1. Application: operations, severity, finish targets
  2. Materials: alloys and their share of work
  3. Machines and system: sumps or central system, volume in L (US gal), filtration rating in µm
  4. Water: hardness in ppm as CaCO3
  5. Constraints: excluded chemistries, OEM approvals, disposal route
  6. Commercials: annual volume, drum 208 L (55 US gal), IBC 1,000 L (264 US gal)
  7. Trial: machines, duration, metrics
  8. Service level: visits, tests, reporting

How to choose a metalworking fluid for an operation and material is a separate decision made before this list is filled in.

Fluid type and ISO 6743-7 category#

Name the fluid type first, using the NIOSH Criteria Document 98-116 (1998) definitions, because concentrate and dilution differ by type. The table compares the four types.

Fluid type Concentrate (NIOSH 98-116, 1998) In-use dilution (NIOSH 98-116) ISO 6743-7 categories (as quoted by vendor sources)
Cutting oils (straight and neat oils) Severely refined petroleum, animal, marine, vegetable or synthetic oils, with or without additives Used as supplied, not diluted with water MHA to MHF (oils), MHG (greases, pastes, waxes), MHH (soaps, powders, solid lubricants)
Soluble oils 30 to 85 % severely refined base oil plus emulsifiers 1 part to 5 to 40 parts water, about 2.4 to 16.7 % by volume MAA to MAD (milky emulsions)
Semi-synthetic metalworking fluids 5 to 30 % severely refined base oil, 30 to 50 % water 1 part to 10 to 40 parts water, about 2.4 to 9.1 % by volume MAE, MAF (microemulsions)
Synthetic cutting fluids No petroleum oil; water soluble or water dispersible 1 part to 10 to 40 parts water, about 2.4 to 9.1 % by volume (calculated) MAG, MAH (solutions)

Percent is by volume of concentrate in the use dilution. ISO 6743-7:1986 also has category MAI (greases and pastes applied mixed with water); category wording is as quoted by vendor sources, not ISO text.

ISO 6743-7:1986 is last confirmed 2020; its 2025 review result is pending.

ASTM D2881-19(2025) is the US classification. The ISO 6743-7 classification of metalworking fluids explains the category letters.

Operation, workpiece material and machine system#

State the operations, the alloys and the system volume in L (US gal).

  • Operations: the hardest one named
  • Materials: each alloy and its share of the work
  • System: sumps or central system, total volume
  • Fluid in use now: water-soluble polyalkylene glycols gel with mineral oil

Mix water and in-use concentration#

UK guidance names 80 to 200 ppm as CaCO3 as ideal mix-water hardness (UKLA/HSE v2.5, section 4.2), while one supplier's data sheet allows 100 to 200 ppm as CaCO3 initially for one boron-free semi-synthetic at 6 to 8 % dilution.

Ask for the in-use range in % by volume of concentrate and the product's refractometer factor; coolant concentration is then checked against that range. An excluded chemistry can carry a dated trigger: boric acid is Annex VI index 005-007-00-2, Repr. 1B H360FD, and under Note 11 a mixture is classified at a boron sum of 0.3 % or more from 1 February 2025 (ATP20).

Which Documents to Request From a Cutting Fluid Supplier#

Request five documents from a cutting fluid supplier before a trial: the safety data sheet, the technical data sheet with the in-use range and refractometer factor, a compatibility statement, any OEM or customer approval letters, and the REACH and TSCA status of the components.

  • Safety data sheet in the local language
  • Technical data sheet with the in-use range and refractometer factor
  • Compatibility statement for paints, seals and the fluid now in the machines
  • OEM or customer approval letters where required
  • REACH and TSCA status of the components

OSHA's Hazard Communication final rule of 20 May 2024 (89 FR 44144) sets 19 November 2027 for makers and distributors and 19 May 2028 for employers to update mixture data sheets (29 CFR 1910.1200(j)(3)).

Safety data sheet, mixing and dosing advice from the supplier#

UK guidance lists what the supplier provides with a metalworking fluid, starting with the safety data sheet and the mixing method (UKLA/HSE Good Practice Guide v2.5, February 2025).

How to read the safety data sheet of a cutting fluid, section by section, is covered separately.

  • Safety data sheet with hazard information
  • Mixing method: concentrate into water, a dosing unit preferred
  • Water quality: hardness and pH
  • Recommended pH and concentration ranges
  • Shelf life of the concentrate
  • Biocide dosing regime
  • System-cleaner use
  • Tramp-oil advice for neat oils
  • Disposal route

How to Compare Metalworking Fluid Quotes#

Compare metalworking fluid quotes on cost per liter of working fluid at the target concentration, then add top-ups, tankside additives, disposal per change and service fees; concentrate price alone does not compare two quotes.

Cost in use per liter of working fluid#

Cost in use equals the concentrate price multiplied by the in-use concentration, shown here as our worked example (2026), not a standard.

  • 5 %: assumed USD 10 per liter of concentrate in 2026 x 0.05 = USD 0.50 per liter of working fluid (about USD 1.89 per US gal)
  • 8 %: USD 10 in 2026 x 0.08 = USD 0.80 per liter (about USD 3.03 per US gal)

Our worked example, not a standard and not a market quote.

Trials and service level#

Agree the trial before the order: machines, duration, success metrics and changeover clean.

One supplier's bulletin states that a cross-reference is not a one-to-one replacement, so compare safety data sheets and run a laboratory and field test. The scope of coolant management services such as audits and recycling can also be bought separately.

Send One Specification to Independent Suppliers#

Send the eight-point specification once through the request form, and independent suppliers receive the same fluid type, operation, material, water and volume data, which makes their quotes comparable on cost in use.

What Else Do Metalworking Fluid Buyers Source?#

Fluid buyers also source additive chemistry when they formulate in house, and disposal when a sump is changed, two purchases with their own suppliers and rules.

Where Do Formulators Find Metalworking Fluid Additive Suppliers?#

Additive chemistry was about 575 kt in 2012 (Kline, STLE TLT), sourced by chemistry class.

Producers are grouped by class under metalworking fluid additive suppliers.

Does the Supplier Take Back Spent Fluid?#

Not as a rule: UK guidance sends spent fluid to an approved waste disposal contractor (UKLA/HSE v2.5, February 2025), and in the US the generator stays responsible.

Metalworking Fluid Suppliers FAQ#

These four answers cover buyer questions on quoting, switching and makers.

What does a metalworking fluid supplier need to quote?#

A supplier needs the eight checklist points, above all fluid type, operations, materials, system volume and mix-water hardness.

Can one cutting fluid replace another by cross-reference?#

No: one supplier's bulletin states that a cross-reference is not one-to-one, so compare the safety data sheets, a laboratory test and a field test. For neat oils, one supplier's manual checks miscibility at 10/90, 50/50 and 90/10 new to old.

What are the different types of cutting fluids?#

Cutting fluids come in four types on the NIOSH 98-116 (1998) basis: straight oils, soluble oils, semi-synthetics and synthetics.

Composition and uses of each are compared under types of cutting fluids.

Who are the largest metalworking fluid manufacturers?#

The latest market-share data in this reference is Kline's 2012 study, in which very few suppliers held more than 10 % in any region and Houghton and Quaker each held more than 10 % in the Americas.
